Serial ConsoleOverviewSystems management using serial console utilities and components
provides a cheap and easy solution to remotely manage systems - usually, but not
necessarily - in an out-of-band fashion. Serial console access works by
redirecting console information to the serial port on a managed system/node.
Development efforts
in Management FunctionsThe Linux kernel can be configured to export the terminal via the serial console upon boot-up, meaning that boot messages can be monitored remotely in realtime. With the use of a serial console concentrator or terminal server, multiple systems can be monitored and managed remotely by accessing a single network IP address and using tools within the terminal server to switch between managed nodes. Serial console access is useful for many management functions:
Serial Console ProductsXinit Systems offers a range of excellent serial terminal server products from Opengear. The entry level CM4001 is great for small deployments - while the enterprise grade CM4148 is perfect for corporate datacenter and large cluster installations.
Opengear CM Series OverviewOpengear’s products are built on open source standards. They embody the strength and security of Linux and they enable users to customize management solutions to meet their own needs. The CM4148 console management solution has a simple Web browser interface so the manager can easily configure the appliance, the access security, and the console ports. However, the manager also can interface directly, at the command line, with the Linux kernel running inside the CM4148. Opengear takes a lead role in the development of open source console management and KVM technology. The CM4148 is supplied with okvm source code and the freedom under open source to be uniquely configured and customized to meet the System Administrator’s or IT Manager’s needs.
Console servers provide a robust and secure solution for locally and remotely accessing, monitoring, and controlling networks of servers and appliances. Opengear's CM series provides direct console and screen access for troubleshooting and diagnostics, and enable the infrastructure to be reconfigured and rebooted, ensuring availability at critical times. A CM series console servers at a remote site can be accessed In-band through the Internet or the enterprise IP network; or Out-of-band through a dial-up modem PPP port or a management network. All connections are secure, with encrypted access to remote systems using up to 128-bit AES encryption. CM4000 also provides a selection of filtering and access logging facilities. All console logs can be archived off line. Access also can be restricted by IP address, by password, or by account. So managers can securely control and manage their distributed networks of servers and appliances. Features and Benefits
